To educate the international trade community on all aspects of technology transfer by providing a forum for the exchange of information on the export and import process.

SIA Member & Attendee Code of Conduct

Membership in SIA and attendance at SIA functions is subject to the observance of SIA’s Code of Conduct. Any member or attendee who violates this Code is subject to expulsion from membership and may be excluded from future SIA events.

The meetings and functions of SIA are designed to facilitate the free exchange of ideas and information. Information from these sessions is not for attribution or publication. Recording devices may not be used.

SIA members and attendees are expected to uphold the highest standards of personal conduct at all SIA functions. Members and/or attendees shall not solicit business or otherwise seek any private or personal financial gain in attending or participating in any SIA meeting or function; including the distribution of material not approved in advance by the SIA Board. Membership/event attendee lists shall not be used or sold for any commercial or promotional purpose.

SIA's mission is to educate the international trade community in all aspects of technology transfer. SIA's unique relationship maintained with the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls and other US Government agencies is key to the Society's success. Basics (Winter & Summer) Conferences The Basics conferences are geared to the newcomer to export controls or to experienced professionals who are seeking refresher training. These conferences provide an overview of export controls and the ITAR, followed by how to sessions covering topics such as: drafting and submitting requests for export authorizations (e.g., DSP forms, and Agreements); developing and implementing ITAR compliance programs; and using export authorizations and ITAR exemptions. Types of Memberships

Effective January 1, 2010, SIA has a new membership structure: Government Members (free): (1) individuals who are employed directly by a U.S. or State Government agency which regulates, administers, or is otherwise involved in export or import controls or related aspects of international trade; and (2) Foreign Embassy employees located in the Washington, DC area. NOTE: This does not include employees from Colleges or Universities, including those that are State institutions, or from government contractors. Industry Members ($25 per year): Any individual who does not meet the criteria of a government membership. Industry membership is on a individual basis (not company) and costs $25 per year. What are the benefits of membership? Industry Members are entitled to a discounted registration fee (currently $100) for SIA conferences. SIA Workshop - Where the Rubber Meets the Road!!

Where the Rubber Meets the Road is a workshop now offered by SIA in conjuction with the Basic Conferences.

This workshop is "A Hands-on Approach to Applying the ITAR in the Real World". You are provided a scenario, and with this scenario, you will be asked to put a DSP-5, DSP-73, TAA & Amendment together, along with much more.

The workshop is facilitated by both Industry and Government. Attendees have the opportunity to collaborate with other members of Industry and Government to navigate through the workshop scenarios and associated materials.

Basics (Winter & Summer)

Basics Conference - These are typically geared to the newcomer to export controls. The target conference attendee has less than one year of experience. These conferences provide basic "how to" information on filling out and submitting requests for export authorizations (e.g., DSP-5s, 61s, 73s, 85s, and technical assistance, manufacturing, and warehouse and distribution agreements.) We normally have two such conferences each year, one in the Winter in the western half of the United States and the other in the Summer in the eastern half.

Fall Conference

Fall Conference - These conferences are typically held in the Washington, D.C. area in the fall. Due to the location and the level of experience of the targeted attendees the focus is at an overview level. Guest speakers are usually from the hierarchy of the export controls community and they provide insight into government policy. Issues addressed in the conference are geared to prevalent industry issues as highlighted by our membership.

Spring Conference

Spring Conference - These are targeted to the exporter with one to five years of experience. While there is some "how to" information provided at these conferences, it is typically focused on more complex issues as opposed to completing and submitting forms. Some typical topics would be licensing of more complex programs, such as when an agreement is appropriate versus a license, and how to use exemptions in exporting defense articles. This conference is normally held in the Spring in the western half of the US.

SIA provides a forum for the exchange of information related to export and import licensing. SIA interests cover the entire spectrum of licensing issues pertaining to the Department of Commerce, Defense, State and Treasury.
