Conferences

SIA's mission is to educate the international trade community in all aspects of technology transfer. SIA's unique relationship maintained with the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls and other US Government agencies is key to the Society's success.

Basics (Winter & Summer) Conferences

The Basics conferences are geared to the newcomer to export controls or to experienced professionals who are seeking refresher training. These conferences provide basic "how to" information concerning such topics as: drafting and submitting requests for export authorizations (e.g., DSP forms, and Agreements); developing and implementing ITAR compliance programs; and using export authorizations and ITAR exemptions.

SIA holds two Basics conferences each year, one in the winter in the western half of the United States and the other in the summer in the eastern half.

“Where the Rubber Meets the Road” – a one day workshop, is offered in conjunction with the Basic Conferences on the day after the regular conference.

Spring & Fall Conferences

The Spring and Fall conferences are targeted to the experienced exporter. While there is some "how to" information provided at these conferences, they focus on more complex issues such as: recent policy and regulatory changes; foreign party due diligence reviews; export licensing and compliance requirements for mergers and acquisitions; recent enforcement actions; and customs and shipping issues.

The conferences are designed to address prevalent industry issues as highlighted by our membership. Speakers are drawn from the export controls community, including senior government officials from the Departments of State, Commerce, Homeland Security and Treasury. The Spring Conference is normally held in the western half of the U.S. and the Fall Conference is held in the Washington, D.C. area.

Workshops - Where the Rubber Meets the Road!!

“Where the Rubber Meets the Road” is a one day workshop offered in conjunction with the Basic Conferences. This workshop is a hands-on approach to applying the ITAR in the Real World". Participants are provided a scenario and challenged to work through the scenario in small groups to determine what export authorizations are required. The attendees then work together to draft the appropriate export applications.

The workshop is facilitated by both Industry and Government personnel. Attendees have the opportunity to work with subject matter experts to navigate through the workshop scenarios and associated materials. The workshop is conducted in an informal atmosphere with participants sitting at round tables of approximately 10 people.

Please go to the Events Calendar to find out when and where the next conference is being held.
